Green Park Stadium is a very popular cricket stadium, located in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is a significant landmark, located near the north eastern part of kanpur, besides the banks of Ganga, and is owned by the Sports department of Uttar Pradesh. Established in 1945, its seating capacity is around 32,000.

History of the Green Park Stadium
This stadium is named after ‘Madam Green’, a British lady who used to practice horse riding on the ground during the British Raj. Currently, it is the only stadium in India that has a student gallery available. It also has the world’s largest manually operated scoreboard.
This stadium is given the nickname of ‘Billiards Table’, due to the flatness and speed of the stadium’s pitch.
In January 1952, the first test match at Green Park Stadium was played, between India and England. The first test win of India versus Australia was in December 1959.
On 24th December 1986, the first One Day International match was played between India and Sri Lanka.
The only T20 international played in this stadium is on 26th January 2017, between India and England.

Architecture
The Green Park stadium is a multi-purpose stadium with a seating capacity of 32,000 people. It also has a student’s gallery, a manually operated scoreboard, and floodlights. Recent renovations have included a new pavilion, which provides modern dressing rooms, media facilities, and dining areas.
The end of this stadium is known as the Mill Pavilion End and the Hostel End, named after Elgin Mill and DAV College ( the second oldest college in Kanpur, situated opposite the Green Park stadium).
It is one of the very few grounds in India that a cricket association does not own, but by a State Government (Uttar Pradesh Government).

Records and Famous Matches
- Hosted the opening match of the 1993 Hero Cup. ( Between India and Sri Lanka)
- India made its 100th test cricket victory in this stadium ( by winning against Sri Lanka by 144 runs and one innings). This match was played from 24th November to 27th November. S.Sreesanth was the man of the match.
- Hosted one 1989 Nehru Cup match (between India and England) on 25th October 1989. England made a total of 255/7 in their 50 overs. However, India successfully made 259/4 in 48.1 overs and achieved victory with six wickets and 11 balls remaining.
- India played its 500th test cricket match in September 2016, in this stadium (between 22nd September to 26th September, 2016). India won by defeating New Zealand by 197 runs. Ravichandran Ashwin’s performance in this match made him the second-fastest bowler to take 200 wickets.
- Hosted England in January 2002 ( in which India won).
- Hosted one World Series in 1994-1995 (the match was played between India and the West Indies). West Indies won by 46 runs. It made a score of 257/6. India made only 211/5. Keith Arthurton of the West Indies was the man of the match.
- The only batsman to score two centuries in a one-day international at the Green Park stadium is Rohit Sharma. He made his first century (150) on 11th October, against South Africa. ( India lost the match). He made his second century on 29th October 2017, against New Zealand. (India won the match).
- On 11th December 2000, in a match between India and Zimbabwe, Sourav Ganguly took five wickets. He was the player of the match. India won by nine wickets.

How to reach Green Park stadium?
- The nearest airport is Kanpur Airport (KNU). Local transport, like taxis, is available to commute from the airport to the stadium. The closest major railway station is Kanpur Central railway ( some local people also refer to it as Mirpur).
- It is well-connected with almost all major cities of India. The stadium is around 5 to 6 kilometres away from the station. You can use local transport like taxis or auto-rickshaws to reach the stadium.
- The stadium is close to the Kanpur Orange Metro Line, such as the Naveen Market metro station. You can walk off from the metro station to the stadium.
- Since the stadium is close to the centre of the city, it is well connected by local buses, auto-rickshaws, or taxis.
There are NO entry fees for the Green Park stadium when there is no match or event taking place. Visitors can come to visit during the opening hours are generally between 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
