Indian Cricket Team History

Cricket History of India

If you have studied the history of cricket, you must be aware that it does not have its origins in Indian roots. Being India’s national sport, you might not think that it originated from the British, unless you are familiar with Indian history.

The fascinating journey of this sport began in the 1700s, when India was part of the British Empire under colonial rule. Only the British participated in the game for the entire 18th century, documenting the first-ever match in 1721.

The ‘Calcutta Cricket Club’ might be a new name to you if you’re new to the history of Indian cricket. It was formed by the English Military Faculty, a cricket club with Indian players who played for the British, starting from 1729. Despite the first formation of the Indian cricket club during the 18th century, the first reported match took place in the 19th century (1851), more than a hundred years later.

Have you heard that the first Indian cricket club, established by the Indian community in 1848, was formed by the Parsees? Once the club was official, in 1877, the team members pursued their first European match.

Women’s cricket was not taken into consideration for the longest time due to its being a male-dominated sport. Their first official test match was against the West Indies, reported to have taken place in 1976.

Even though the roots of cricket belong to the British, the years of growth, prodigies, and legends in Indian cricket team history have shaped the sport into the identity of our country as a national honour.
