Kapil Dev was born in Chandigarh, in a Punjabi Hindu family. After the partition, his family moved to Fazilka, then finally, they moved to Chandigarh. His father, Ram Lal Nikhanj, was a teak merchant.

He studied at DAV College. In 1980, he married Romi Bhatia (now Romi Dev). On 16th January, 1996, Amiya Dev, their daughter, was born to them.

He wrote three autobiographical books, titled ‘By God’s Decree’, ‘Cricket My Style’, and ‘Straight from the Heart’. Another book he was he wrote was ‘We, The Sikhs’.

Domestic Cricket Career

Kapil Dev began playing for Haryana in November 1975. On his debut, he successfully took a 6-wicket haul.

He made 8/36 against Jammu and Kashmir in the 1976-77 season. He then made his best innings haul of 8/20 in 9 overs, in the second innings.

In the 1977-1978 season, he started by taking 8/38 in the first innings. He made his maiden 10-wicket haul in FC cricket by taking three wickets in the second innings of the match.

One of his greatest achievements in his domestic career was leading Haryana to the 1990-91 season of the Ranji Trophy Championship. He led the team to a score of 605 runs, by taking 5 wickets and scoring 141. 

He won the Ranji Trophy Championship, which was his first and only Ranji Trophy Championship.

He had also played County Cricket. He played for Northamptonshire from 1981 to 1983, and Worcestershire from 1984 to 1985.

He played 40 FC cricket matches in the County Cricket. He made 4 centuries, 14 half-centuries, and a total of 2312 runs across 64 innings.

International Cricket Career

His international cricket career spanned from 1978 to 1994. He made his Test Cricket debut on 16th October 1978, in Faisalabad, Pakistan.

He played a total of 131 Test Cricket matches for India. He made a total of 5248 runs scored, with 8 centuries, 27 half-centuries. His highest score was 163.

His best bowling figures were 9/83 against the West Indies.

He made his One Day International debut on 1st October 1978 against Pakistan in Quetta.

He has played 225 One Day Internationals for India, from 1978 to 1994.

He scored a total of 3,783 runs, with one century and 14 half-centuries. His highest score was 175 (not out) against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup. It is widely known as the greatest One Day International innings ever played.
