Sunil Gavaskar was born in Mumbai (then Bombay) in a middle class Marathi family.
He attended St. Xavier’s High School in Mumbai, where, in 1966, he was named as India’s best schoolboy Cricketer of the year. He later went to St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai.
In his autobiography “Sunny Days”, he mentioned that he was almost switched at birth. His uncle spotted it, as Sunil had a birthmark near his ear, which the child did not have.

Sunil Gavaskar represented his home team (now Mumbai) in the Ranji Trophy. He made his debut in the 1969 -70 season. There, he was dismissed for a duck (0 runs).
However, he didn’t lose his determination and scored three centuries consecutively in the next three Ranji matches.
He had played 67 matches in the Ranji Trophy, with a total run scored of 5335, and a batting average of 70.18. He made 20 centuries.
His highest first-class score was 340, which he scored in a match for Mumbai against Bengal in the Ranji Trophy in the 1981-82 season.
Apart from the Ranji Trophy, Sunil Gavaskar also played in various other domestic tournaments

International Cricket Career
Sunil Gavaskar’s International Cricket Career spanned from 1971 to 1987. His success in test cricket earned him the title of the “Little Master”.
He made his debut in test cricket in March 1971, against the West Indies. He scored 774 runs in that debut series (4 matches), with a speed of 154.80, thus making the record of most runs in a debut series.
He scored four centuries in the series, in both innings and the final test. He was only the second Indian to achieve this feat.
He has made a total of 34 test centuries, which was the world record at that time. Afterwards, it was broken by Sachin Tendulkar, nearly two decades later.
He played his last Test match in March 1987 against Pakistan.
He achieved his only One Day International century in the 1987 World Cup, against New Zealand.
He played his last One Day International in November 1987 against England.
